1. About this policy

This policy explains how RiseDare treats the personal data of children and teenagers. RiseDare is operated by (to be added), (to be added) (RiseDare, we, us or our). It adds to our Privacy Policy; where the two differ for a user under 18, this policy applies.

It is written for parents and guardians, and for young users themselves. If you are under 18, please read it with a parent or guardian.

2. Who counts as a child

Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 a child is anyone who has not completed 18 years of age. We use that meaning for users in India. In other countries the age at which a person can consent to the use of their own data may be different, and we follow the rule that applies where the user lives.

In this policy, child and minor both mean a user under 18, and parent includes a lawful guardian.

3. Minimum age

  • RiseDare is not directed at children under 13. Children under 13 may not create an account.
  • Users aged 13 to 17 may use RiseDare only with the verifiable consent of a parent, as required under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 for users under 18.
  • If the minimum age in your country is higher than 13, the higher age applies.
  • Hardcore Mode is for users aged 18 and over only.

4. How we learn a user's age

We ask for age or date of birth when an account is created. We rely on the answer being truthful. We do not ask children for identity documents as a matter of routine, and we collect no more information than we need to establish age and consent.

If we later have good reason to believe that an account belongs to someone under 13, or to someone aged 13 to 17 without a parent's consent, we will restrict the account and act as described in the section on accounts created without consent.

5. Verifiable parental consent

Before we process the personal data of a user aged 13 to 17, we ask the parent to confirm that they are an adult, that they are the child's parent or lawful guardian, and that they agree to the child using RiseDare as described in this policy and the Privacy Policy.

We verify consent using a method permitted by the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and the rules made under it. The information a parent gives us for this purpose is used only to verify and record consent and to contact the parent about the child's account.

A parent may refuse consent, in which case the child's account is not created or is closed. A parent may also withdraw consent at any time, as explained below.

6. What we collect from a minor

We collect from a minor only what is needed to run the features they use. In practice this is the same limited set described in the Privacy Policy, with the restrictions in the next section.

  • Account data: name, e-mail address or phone number, language and time zone.
  • Alarm and usage data: alarm times, missions chosen, completion times, streaks and badges.
  • Sleep data, only if sleep tracking is turned on.
  • Camera and microphone input during photo, pose or audio missions. This is processed on the device. Photos and recordings are not uploaded unless the user explicitly shares them.
  • Step count, only if a step mission is used and access is allowed.
  • Basic device data: device model, operating system version, app version and crash logs.
  • A parent's contact details and the record of their consent.

7. Protections for minors

For every account that we know belongs to a user under 18, the following apply.

  • No targeted advertising and no behavioural tracking or monitoring of the child for advertising or profiling.
  • Hardcore Mode is disabled. A minor cannot stake money on an alarm.
  • Paid rewards are disabled.
  • Groups are limited to invite-only. A minor can only join a group they have been invited to and cannot be found or approached by strangers through the app.
  • We do not sell a child's personal data, and we do not share it with anyone other than the processors and group members described in the Privacy Policy.
  • We do not process a child's data in a way that is likely to harm the child's wellbeing.

8. Camera, microphone and photos

Many dares use the camera or microphone, which understandably concerns parents. The photo and pose checks run on the device. Photos are not uploaded to our servers unless the user chooses to share them. The microphone is on only during an audio dare or during sleep tracking that the user has turned on, and sleep audio stays on the device.

A parent can switch off camera, microphone or any other permission for RiseDare in the phone's settings at any time. The child can then choose dares that do not need that permission, such as maths, memory or typing. See App Permissions & Data Safety.

9. Groups and what other people can see

If a minor joins a group, the other members of that group can see the minor's name, avatar and wake-up status, and can send nudges and reactions. Nothing else from the account is visible to them. Alarms, sleep data and Chuzi chats are not shown to group members.

We encourage young users to use a first name or nickname rather than a full name, not to use a photograph of their face as an avatar, and to join groups only with people they know in real life. Our Community Guidelines apply to everyone, and any member or parent can report a message or a member.

10. Family plans

A parent who is the organiser of a Family plan can invite a child as a member. Being on the same Family plan does not give the organiser a view of the child's alarms, sleep data or chats inside the app; members' data stays private from each other unless it is shared in a group. A parent who wants a copy of the child's data can ask us for it as described below.

11. Chuzi AI

Chuzi's AI features send the minimum context needed, such as first name, wake-up time, weather and streak, to our AI provider to produce a reply. We do not allow providers to train their models on user data. Young users should not share sensitive information such as health conditions, passwords or identity numbers with Chuzi.

AI features can be turned off, and Chuzi's memory cleared, in Settings > Chuzi AI. Chuzi's replies are general wellbeing tips and are not medical advice.

12. Payments by minors

A minor should not buy a subscription without a parent's permission. Purchases made through the App Store or Google Play are controlled by the family and purchase-approval settings of those stores, which we recommend parents switch on. If a child has made a purchase without permission, see the Refund & Cancellation Policy or write to [email protected].

13. What parents and guardians can do

After we have confirmed that you are the child's parent or lawful guardian, you may:

  • Ask what personal data we hold about your child and receive a copy.
  • Ask us to correct or update it.
  • Ask us to delete particular data, or the whole account.
  • Withdraw your consent. We will then stop processing your child's data and close the account, keeping only what the law requires us to keep.
  • Ask us to stop sending your child any optional messages.
  • Raise a complaint with our Grievance Officer.

14. How to make a request

Write to [email protected]. Tell us the e-mail address or phone number on the child's account and what you would like us to do. We will take reasonable steps to check that you are the parent or guardian before we disclose or delete anything, so that a child's data is not handed to the wrong person.

A child's account can also be deleted from inside the app under Settings > Account > Delete account, or through the routes described in Data & Account Deletion. When an account is deleted, data is erased within 30 days, apart from the limited records that the law requires us to keep.

15. Accounts created without consent, or by a child under 13

If you think a child has given us data without a parent's consent, e-mail [email protected] and we will delete it.

If we find that an account belongs to a child under 13, we close the account and delete the personal data collected from it. If we find that an account belongs to a user aged 13 to 17 for whom we hold no parental consent, we restrict the account and ask for consent; if consent is not given, we close the account and delete the data.

16. Turning 18

When a user reaches 18, the account becomes an ordinary adult account. The protections for minors in this policy stop applying, and features that are limited to adults can be used if the user chooses to turn them on and meets their conditions. The user may ask us at that point to delete any data collected while they were a minor.

17. Users outside India

RiseDare is run from India and designed around Indian law. If you live elsewhere, the child-protection law of your country may give additional protection. As a general statement, we do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 in the United States without verifiable parental consent, in line with the principles of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, and in the European Union and United Kingdom we respect the age of digital consent set by each country under data protection law. Where local law sets a stricter rule than this policy, we follow the stricter rule.

18. Contact and complaints

Questions about a child's privacy: [email protected]. General help: [email protected]. Complaints: our Grievance Officer, (to be added), at [email protected], following the process in Grievance Redressal & Contact. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may approach the Data Protection Board of India.
